Head Study

This one took roughly 5-6 hours! Dunno if it's indicative of how far along a drawing should be after 5-6 hours, but that's how long it took me, haha.  Done with conte on newsprint.

Stog the Pitkeeper

Here's the latest finished Orc portrait...Stog the Pitkeeper.  This time around I really utilized a tiling technique to put in swatches of color and value to build it up, I think it came out really successful.

Finished the second orc portrait out of...12? 14?  This will likely be the last one shown in its full until I get the book done and out.

So the main difference between this one and the first one was I tried to avoid the process I did of flats+multiply shadow+overlay/color dodge light layers, and instead just work the colors right from the get go with the appropriate values.  I must be absorbing more information than I thought, because even though I struggled with this in the past this time around it was much easier.

Orc Portraits

Here's some recent personal stuff I've been doing as part of an idea of a digital book I'm kicking around. A series of portraits of Orcs, which is really an excuse for me to draw some appealing but ugly guys and work on my handling and understanding of light and color. I originally toyed with the idea of doing it all digitally from start to finish, but having actual ink work in the piece REALLY makes it sing, so that's the method I'm taking for these.

I'm so excited to finally announce that my Nasutoceratops model is now available as my SECOND resin kit!  This time the guy is in 1:15 scale, which gives him a whopping 13" in a neutral pose (the above pose, which the model is in, is about 10" from the two farthest points")  I've been really happy with how this came out, from the initial sculpt to the final finished paint job that was done for it.


Like the T. rex, you can purchase the kit either unfinished and unassembled or finished over at Dan's Dinosaurs. This is Dan's 7th exclusive model for his site (with my rex being no. 6!)  I can't wait to get my copy in the mail and go to town on it!

Amargasaurus now available on Shapeways!

Currently very busy with work, atelier classes, and a move into a permanent house, but I wanted to mention that the Amargasaurus models are now available on Shapeways in 1/40 scale and 1/72 scale!  You can view them by visiting my shop (link is in the right hand column.)

Something I dug out of my hard drive two weeks ago...

Found this to show to a friend who asked about it - I did this waaaay back in April-May of 2008 as part of my Senior Project for SCAD.  The poem was written and narrated by my friend Ben, while I laid out the storyboards and designed characters, settings, and props.

I even did a maquette for the main troll in this, and I think it was one of my first attempts at sculpting in Chavant.

It's rough in a some spots here and there, but I think the general feel is pretty good still, and some of the sight gags got a chuckle out of me after looking at this again. If I ever wanted to revisit it I'd love to do a new pass on the boards and see what could be improved.

Parasaurolophus Models

I wanted to put up the ten finished models that I did of the Parasaurolophus herd.  These found their way elsewhere on the internet, but I failed to give my blog any love with new dinosaurs so here's to changing that!

When I have some fooling around time I'd like to try my hand at doing a proper rendering pass on one of these, just to have a really nice render of the sculpts.  I've yet to order any prints myself, but some people over at the Dinosaur Toy Forum had their prints come in and love them.

If you happen to order any of these models, I'd love to see whatever paint-ups or dioramas you make of them.

This is from the latest assignment - designing an animal.  Being a fan of hornbills, I opted to do the hooded hornbill.

Pirates!

Third week of the character design class - Piraaaaaaatteess!

These came out a lot easier than the crusaders did.  The little captain was really fun to draw once the idea came about in my head, but I think I still have a soft spot for my idiot-boy pirate on the left.

Also, I've been sculpting dinosaurs!  The first was a generic ornithopod that I did to try out some creature sculpting, while the second is a Avaceratops. It's still in a neutral pose, but I'll be posing it into something more dynamic after I finish him up detail wise.

Crusaders

Here's some character designs done for this week's assignment: Crusaders!

My initial ones I think were too caught up in trying to design, and not enough in capturing the energy of the character, so I did a second batch to try and rectify that.  I think I came closer to the mark.
